Republicanism versus liberalism: towards a pre-history

This essay argues that the “republicanism versus liberalism” debate came to prominence in 1980s was largely an artificial construction made possible by recent genealogies of its constituent terms. The first section suggests idea “early modern took shape from 1930s, and identifies three broad schools thought: Marxist, democratic classical.
